Palace of Versailles

The Palace of Versailles is a must-see museum and landmark if you are looking for things to do in Paris that display indulgent and gaudy architecture.  Wrapped in gold, many of the gates, doors, and features of the palace display the power and wealth of France throughout the years.  The palace is a royal château in Versailles in the Île-de-France region of France and also provides over 2,000 acres of fields and bike paths if you are looking for an extended trip to Versailles.  Perfect for a day trip if you are staying in Paris, Versailles provides plenty to see and do such as a Bike Tour around the Versailles Gardens.

When the château was originally built, Versailles was only a country village.  It has since become a wealthy suburb of Paris located just  20 kilometers southwest of the Paris. The court of Versailles was the center of political power in France from 1682, when Louis XIV moved from Paris, until the royal family was forced to return to the capital in October 1789 after the beginning of the French Revolution. Versailles is famous not only as a building, but as a symbol of the system of absolute monarchy of the Ancien Régime.

We may never know the true amount spent on the creation of Versailles, and most current estimates are speculative. A recent estimate has placed the amount spent on Versailles during the Ancien régime as more than US$2 billion. This figure in all probability is an under-evaluation of the money spent on Versailles.
